Happy New Years from FCTP...

2007 has been a great year for FCTP. We got our first paid advertiser...thank you Razor Gator. We 43,210 unique visitors throughout the year and 70,504 total page loads. Shocking to me there are 11,931 people who returned for a second read. Yikes.

In 2008 I'll do my best to keep you all up to date with the young kids working their way into college and through to the pros.

Have a great New Year! Thanks for being loyal readers.

Billy Beane is Coming To MLS...

As many if not all of you know, the San Jose Earthquakes are rejoining MLS in 2008. In the past I talked about how the addition of a new team stretches the player pool. This stretching requires more players who can perform or we'll see the level of play go down in MLS.

Seemingly in response, MLS rule makers decided to simplify and expand the international player category. Previously teams were allowed 4 Senior International (SI) players and 3 Youth International (YI) players. Now MLS clubs will be allowed 8 International players. Without the youth/senior designation it is simplified and with one more it is expanded. FC Toronto has slightly different rules since they're in Canada. In 2008 29% of MLS rosters will be International compared with 25%. That increase doesn't seem like a big deal to me and I like the fact that teams won't have to worry about youth/senior. Now they'll be able to get the best talent from around the world if the price is right.

That last comment, if the price is right, brings me to my overall point and the title of this post. Do you know who Billy Beane is? If you're a baseball fan or from the Bay Area you probably do. However, there are probably some MLS fans who have no idea. It is time to learn folks, because his mastery of the baseball salary cap and talent scouting is about to turn MLS upside down. Managers in the English Premier League are listening to him and in 2008 he becomes one of the owners of a MLS club.

While Beane won't be the General Manager of the club, he will be behind the scenes. If you read the above article the way I did, it was Beane's interest in soccer and that got the Oakland A's owner to invest in MLS. And now Beane will be working with GM John Doyle and head coach Frank Yallop to employ his famous Moneyball tactics in MLS.

The rest of MLS should be scared. The salary cap has always been a total mystery to MLS fans and a seemingly partial mystery to MLS clubs. Trades are made that make no sense until salary cap relief is mentioned or another team paying a portion of salary is leaked. While MLS doesn't have the transfer market overpayment syndrome as mentioned in the article, MLS does have management teams that don't totally grasp how salary cap affects team composition. There are those coaches who just want their good players and then there are the general managers who have to grasp contract negotiations and how that impacts who can be signed. This has been the reality in baseball for years and Billy Beane learned how to master and exploit it. I have every reason to believe Beane is going to do the same in MLS, and teams that can't keep up with the Earthquakes will quickly fall behind them in the standings.

Folks, Beane entering the MLS ushers in a new era of American soccer. This will be the era where scouting college soccer really matters, because teams are going to need to make the most of the young, cheap players to effectively use all 8 international spots. If Beane and his team can come up with effective statistics to use in college scouting, they're going to blow the doors off the rest of the league. While I don't think we'll see many results in 2008, 2009 and beyond should see the Earthquakes with one of the best rosters well controlled within the MLS Salary budget. No longer will a MLS coach be able to take a hint from a college coaching friend, they'll need the data to back it up.

2008 Pre-MLS Combine Player Rankings...

Thanks to the guys at Pro Player Pipeline we have a good ranking/representation of the kids potentially joining MLS in 2008. The combine is coming up in the middle of January and until then, this is the list.

At this point the 2008 draft class looks shallow. There is a large amount of defensive talent but it remains to be seen how many of the defenders will be able to step up to MLS levels. The other positions seem shallow, with many future MLS journeymen. There could be a diamond in the rough waiting for the right MLS coach to polish him into the next Clint Dempsey, but at this point he's hiding from me amongst the coal.

Enjoy.

MLS Rookie Darkhorses...

Every season there are those players who find their way to a MLS team and you end up scratching your head asking, 'where did they come from?' Sometimes they are drafted but didn't play in the combine. Sal Cacavale anyone have him on their 2007 mock drafts? Doubt it, but he was selected in the Supplemental Draft and he did get a MLS deal and he did play in 1 Red Bull New York game and he did score 1 goal in the 2 minutes of playing time he had. Yes, I didn't make that up.

So who could be that Sal of 2008? Here are a few names for you to remember in 2008:

John Gilkerson - D - Winthrop: The Winchester, VA native has been invited to the INFO Sport Combine in Samford, FL according to his agent. That combine has helped other MLS players get seen. Played for the Hampton Roads Piranhas in the PDL. 2006 All-Big South 1st Team.

Nate Oyefeso - M/F/GK - Columbia Union College: Holds the assist record at his college and is also attending the INFO Sports Combine in early January. Has youth club experience in Italy including a try out with Italian giants Juventus before his family moved to the US. In 2007 he was all over the USCAA All-American list.

Saidi Isaac - F - Winthrop: Before the start of the season Isaac was on the MAC Herman Trophy watch list. He's been named to the Big South first team and played in the PDL for the Indiana Invaders. The Kenyan has played for his nation's U-18 & U-20 team. His list of achievements is a mile long.

Joe Donoho - D - Bradley: Defensive player who scored 6 goals and made 3 assists from his back line position. Named College Soccer News 2nd team All-American. Has PDL experience with the Michigan Bucks and his Bradley coach, Jim DeRose, was named 2007 coach of the year by Soccer America.

There are a few guys. Who else do you think could make it into MLS?

Happy Boxing Day?

I assume that is what you say today in the UK. However, I'm not sure.

Merry Christmas is what I know, and I send that out to all my loyal readers. I'm sorry for the lack of contact over the long, holiday weekend. I was busy rockin' the free world with Guitar Hero III.

Not much news on my front. I'm working on some good January features. One could involve a college player trying to make the pros. There will be the typical mock drafts. Combine coverage. All that and a bag of chips.

So don't leave me just yet, wait until February.

Happy Boxing Day, friends.

2008 MLS Combine To Add Between 8-12 More Players...

Before the January event MLS will announce between 8-12 more players who will attend the annual player combine. Those players will be split between Generation Adidas, Division II, Division III and NAIA according to a source inside MLS who wishes to remain anonymous.

One of the players to be added is reportedly the young HaitianRicardo Pierre-Louis. In 17 matches for Lee University this season Pierre-Louis scored 29 goals and had 11 assists. Over the summer the forward scored 6 goals for the PDL's Cape Cod Crusaders. He is also part of the Haitian national team set up along with former MLS players Jean Philippe Peguero and Fabrice Nöel.

2007 NCAA College C2007 NCAA College Cup Is In The Books…up Is In The Books…

Wake Forest completed the dream season by winning the 2007 NCAA College Cup yesterday. They went from start to finish as the best team in the land and proved it with a come from behind victory over Ohio State. True, the ACC championship would have capped things off but I’m sure they players don’t mind the season outcome now. The only team to beat Wake in 2007? Boston College. Those two losses were enough to sway the NCAA selection committee to give BC the #1 seed as opposed to Wake, which I’m sure they’d agree in retrospect, was a mistake. Wake Forest proved them wrong.

The NCAA tournament gave MLS coaches a great look at many players. The player who impressed me the most in the final was Marcus Tracey. His composure on the ball, his speed, his athletic ability made him stand out as someone who can make it in MLS. He is a junior so he’ll have to be a generation adidas player if he joins the league in 2008. I don’t know if he’ll want to leave school early, but if he does I’m sure MLS coaches are already drooling over him. His performance in both the semi-final and final made him my MVP of the tourney.

Here is a little bit of a key for my honors listed above: "DL" is a friend of FCTP who alerted me to those players (I had some of them already but DL helped me out, if you want to hear more from DL lobby for him in the comments to start contributing to the blog.) "TDS" = Top Drawer Soccer. "CSN" = College Soccer News

We've already heard after my last post some outrage that Matt Allen wasn't included in the list. Players who miss the combine will have to work that much harder to make a MLS team. They may go the USL route and they may get a tryout with a specific team. All is not lost for them, but they'll have to work harder. Anyone else you're surprised didn't get an invite?

Here are some guys I was looking to get invited, but didn't:

Matt Allen - Creighton - GK
Kraig Chiles - San Jose State - MF
Mike Graczyk - New Mexico - GK
Abimbola Pedro - George Washington - F
Yannick Reyering - Virginia - F
Jamil Roberts - Santa Clara - D
Simon Schoendorf - South Florida - M

This is when the MLS draft season really heats up. Enjoy it folks!

2008 MLS Combine List is Out...

Ives scooped me on this one. The players who are headed to the MLS combine are now known. I can't compare it to my list right now, you can do that by looking in the right margin. I'll do my best to get to more in depth analysis tonight. For now, enjoy Ives' work.

2007 College Cup Set...

Sorry for the silence here at FCTP after the big weekend. Sometimes life moves too fast to post. Now it is Wednesday, I am in South Florida on business, and here were are.

The final four: Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, Ohio State & UMass. Yes, UMass is amongst three ranked teams in the NCAA soccer finals. The semi-final kicks off this Friday and concludes on Sunday.

The big match of the weekend will be #11 Virginia Tech and #2 Wake Forest. Back in October the two met in Blacksburg, VA and tied in a double overtime, six goal thriller. Word out of Blacksburg is that Junior forward Patrick Nyarko is playing in his last college season before leaving for the pros. This great VT run is in large part thanks for Nyarko, but remember it is a team sport. Wake has quite a few players who will feature in the upcoming MLS combine.

On the other side of the bracket you have to assume #5 Ohio State will be able to defeat UMass. Then again, #1 Boston College thought they'd have an easy road to the third round while UMass had a different idea.

The final will be televised on ESPN2, live at 3 pm est. Enjoy catching some future pros before they're in the big time.

Weekend American Soccer Action...

Multiple places to catch soccer in America this weekend. If you've been reading this blog you'll know the NCAA tourney continues this weekend. Doug McIntyre has a nice preview of the Elite Eight coming up this weekend. I don't think any of these games will be nationally televised. Who knows, maybe ESPNU will help some folks out. You'll probably need to head out to a live match if you want to see one of the quarterfinal match ups. The other big event this weekend is the Nike Friendlies. The US U-17 men play against Brazil tomorrow. The game will be shown live on FSC at 2:30 pm est. The U-17 men started the event with a win over Russia yesterday. Their third match of the weekend is against Turkey on Sunday.

Enjoy!

2007 Nike Friendlies…

The 2007 Nike Friendlies kick off tomorrow, 12-6-07, at IMG Academies in Bradenton, Florida. The US U-17 team is split into the ‘92s and ‘91s. The ‘92s are playing against international competition Russia, Brazil and Turkey while the ‘91s are playing against domestic opponents FC Delco, Real Colorado and Vardar. There will also be two US U-15 teams playing against various American club teams as part of the new US Soccer Development Academy.

These matches will be the debut of new U-17 manager Wilmer Cabrera. The former Colombian international is a veteran of two FIFA World Cups, and will be looking to transfer his experience to the young guns of American soccer.

You can watch the U-17 international matches on FSC this week. Here is the schedule. I know I’m setting my DVR to pick up all three.

We’re just 20 hours from kick off, according to USsoccer.com. Get excited people! There is a chance some of these kids will join MLS in the coming years, maybe even this January.

***Update***

I noticed in the participating clubs lists (U-15/16 & U-17/18) that not all of the US Soccer Development Academy teams were going to the Nike friendlies, specifically the MLS youth teams. It turns out since this is a Nike sponsored event, non-Nike sponsored clubs are not invited. Just another sign that American youth soccer is a fragmented, money driven game. The label of the Development Academy was added to the event since Nike and US Soccer are close friends, however this is not an official Academy event.

I'm not trying to say everything US Soccer does needs to be a large, competitive event...just trying to point out that this isn't necessarily the best of the best across the country playing each other as the Development Academy label would lead you to believe.

Thanks to Brian Crookham of the Colorado Rapids for helping me sort that out.

Quarterfinal Matches Set…

Check the bracket to see who advanced to the Quarterfinals and who went home. Quarterfinal matches take place this week while the semi-finals/finals turn into the College Cup and take place at SAS Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina 12/14 & 12/16.

The bracket is certainly looking interesting. One flaw to point out is that we have a possible showdown between the top two teams of the regular season in the semis as opposed to the finals. I still think BC should have been put second or third, ensuring the best final would be between the best teams; UConn and Wake Forest. BC is out and now the best final is going to happen in the semi-final round. This happens a lot in this type of tournament but I feel like the pairings were made in error, relying on the result of the ACC tourney too much. BC did beat Wake in the regular season and ACC tourney, but BC lost to Quinnipiac, Brown, Providence and Clemson while Wake only lost to BC all season.

Wake Forest still needs to beat talented Notre Dame to make College Cup and UConn needs to beat Virginia Tech to advance. Those are going to be tough games for all four schools. If you live near UConn or Wake, head to see some great college soccer this weekend.

The other side of the bracket has one seeded team left, #5 Ohio State. Ohio State has been a revelation this season and has the easier road to the final. However, UMass, Chicago-Illinois and Bradley have been the giant killers thus far so Ohio State needs to keep their composure and win the games they should win.

Here are the kids on my list, from the schools still in the tourney:
